hi. i was at several relief operation centers the past days and i noticed that goods are not evenly distributed in the centers (ex. xavier has too much rice but needs soaps while abscbn has too much soaps but needs rice). as you have more following than i do, i need your help to please share this link so swapping can be done to avoid shortages in the relief packs. thanks!!! http://bit.ly/OndoySwapStation

Bicol is now under typhoon signal #1. Tropical depression “Pepeng” (international code name “Parma”) is approaching. News from Pagasa is encouraging (although Pagasa’s record, based on last year’s “Frank” and the recent “Onyong”, don’t inspire much confidence). Pagasa doesn’t expect the succeeding 2 storms to be very destructive.

Lots of Filipinos have now been awakened to the fact that the veneer of world-class malls and fabulous gated communities only serve to distract many of us from the dreadful situation that prevails underneath the surface.

While some of us live comfortably in ivory towers, the vast majority of Filipinos live in squalid, sub-human conditions. we have been abusing our ecosystem for far too long, all in the name of expediency and profits. While I hope that this prods our people, our businessmen and our government to stop sweeping inconvenient truths under the rug, I am afraid that when this becomes nothing but a bad dream, we will return to our profligate ways.

You know what’s scary? All the plastic bags that the relief good are being repacked in. What are the chances those will be disposed of properly?

I wish that along with the help and donations, education (and proper disposal/recycling) will be spread too. Else, when the next storm hits, we’ll have more trash floating with the floods.

To Relief Goods & Services providers and Evacuation Centers/Shelters, you are encouraged to enlist your org at http://sahana.kahelos.org/, so that the needs of the shelters will be matched with the relief goods & services once NDCC officially adopts the Sahana database. Just register and go to Organization Registry & Shelter Registry on the navigation menu on the left. Then click Add.

The volunteer sheet can be found at http://sahana.kahelos.org/volunteer.php while the forum is at http://sahana.kahelos.org/forum/ . You don’t need to be an IT person to volunteer since most of the tasks will only entail research and/or encoding.
