What is the fuss? What is $20,000 for a restaurant meal in New York. It's really so pathetic how the press can manipulate matters! What is pitiable is the fact that I guess many of those who made criticisms haven't even been to New York or any part of the US.

I'm glad I stumbled on this blogsite. I'm been meaning to share this story but couldn't find an appropriate site to post it.

A couple of days ago, my husband came home from work eagerly wanting to share a story that was recounted to him by a co-worker. Not that it was a nice story. It was more that his blood really boiled upon hearing it, as mine did as well.

This co-worker of his recently communicated with his best buddy from San Francisco. This friend's father ran a limo service. Guess who their recent clients were? GMA and her cohorts! And guess how many limos they rented? As many as the number of the delegates!

The limos were signed up for 10 hours, only 3 of it were used to ferry human cargo. The remaining 7 hours? They were spent transporting boxes and boxes of items from the delegates' shopping sprees! It was certainly a great day of business for the owner. But he also couldn't get over the ostentatiousness and lack of delicadeza of the presidential party.

Where will the power plant that Cong. Suarez is trying to erect be located? Will it be in Quezon Province? If so, are there no laws prohibiting an elected official from being involved in business, especially in the area he holds most authority over?

Article heading in PDI Aug 13, 2009 reads:

‘Billions’ in investments vs dinner—Palace

?

However, Katigbak writes:

Remonde’s tally as reported by the embassy does not conform to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, a set of standardized accounting rules, so it is not surprising that the sum conjured seems totally out of whack with reality.

The STAR Washington bureau, parsing his tally, notes that:

• The $350-million millennium grant has not yet been approved as the Philippines still has to pass a ‘control of corruption’ criterion.

• The $1-billion in garment exports refers to a bill filed by Rep. Jim McDermott in June to allow certain types of clothing made in the Philippines to enter the US duty free or at substantially reduced tariff. If, and that’s a big IF, Congress takes up the bill next year and approves it, Philippine garments exports to the US are projected to increase by $1 billion after the first full year of implementation.

• The $198-million for veterans was signed into law by President Barack Obama in February after decades of tortuous negotiations between both sides.

• On the $1.6 billion involving the GSP, the Philippines has consistently not fully utilized its benefits under this program aimed at promoting economic growth in the developing world by providing preferential dutyfree entry to the US for nearly 5,000 products.

• The rest of Coca Cola’s proposed $1- billion investment in the Philippines will be spent over five years for the construction of a new soft drink plant as well as the improvement of distribution networks.
