the likelihood of Erap running for President seems very remote.

Carl, I think you are correct that his threat must be symbolic.

At this stage, do we have a hint of whoever he is Erap will support?

I predict Villar.

Erap's threat to run in 2010 will most likely fall on deaf ears. His poll numbers aren't that great, anyway. And there are those who have already invested so much time and money on their run for the Presidency, that they are just chafing at the bit, primed to make a dash for the much-coveted prize.

Erap's threat may turn out to be just largely symbolic. If he makes good on it, what will it achieve? It's like threatening to sabotage everyone if they can't get their act together. It's like a father, when confronted with a quarrelsome family, threatening to blow up himself and the the whole family if they don't behave. Fear, as a motivator, often loses out to greed.

"divided opposition essentially guarantees that the administration can anoint — in public, or behind the scenes — its successor."

Sadly, the Filipino electorate cannot understand this. Simply the people did not realize that had Ping with 10.88% did not push through his candidacy in 2004 election and supported FPJ with 36.51% that would have resulted to 47.39% of the votes which is more than the Arroyo's 39.9% votes.

You would expect the opposition candidates to be wiser enough this time and unite, but hell no considering the number of candidates announcing their candidacy so early. More pathetic is that the threat of Estrada to run is falling into deaf ears due to his diminished capacity. The candidates cannot see the wisdom of the threat beyond his diminished capacity.

The "divide and conquer" rule clearly favors the current President and whoever she will annoint to secure an agreement that her family will not be hunted with investigations when her term is over.

This is sad future for the Filipinos but Gloria Arroyo has the upper hand.

Primary election is better than run-off election. No need to amend the constitution.

Will GMA’s anointment be a “kiss of death” to her candidate in 2010? Some political pundits believe that GMA’s support will be a negative, rather than a positive, factor.

However, they ignore the fact that GMA can be the big difference if she throws the entire resources of the government behind the candidate of the administration.

The Big Question:Who among these presidentiables will make a deal to protect her interests if elected in 2010?

Ours is a democracy by discretion. Even if the president is the president of all the people, she chooses to be selective. To cite one example...by allowing the majority in congress to persecute the few who does not kowtow by denying them of their pork thus persecuting also their constituents, the president chose not to be the president of all the people.

Therefore, whether the president is elected by landslide or by the minority of the voters is irrelevant.

Run-off election is still election, why should we allow ourselves to be cheated twice when once will suffice?
