Fashion police

My column for today is Fashion police, which is, of course, about our experience during the Black Friday protest activity. As you can well imagine, it will be the topic of most of my columns for this week, so let me just point you in the direction of what others, who were there, have written:

Enteng Romano, who was arrested with Dinky, writes about what happened and why.

Edwin Lacierda, who served as Enteng’s lawyer, recounts the experience in The long wait and in The release of the twins (after it was over, two bLAWggers met: La Vida Lawyer had been waiting outside to give moral support).

Sylvia Mayuga also recounts events at City Hall and asks questions about what happened.

Also in the Black Friday Protest Movement blog, pictures and an account of what happened.

Here are the few photos that I took:

Gar(74)-1
Enteng Romano and Dinky Soliman being interviewed shortly after their abduction and arrest
Gar(75)
Mr. Policeman in his precinct wondering whether his orders were worth it

Gar(76)-1
Enteng and Dinky awaiting their fate. Beside Dinky is a policewoman well known for her kindness and jolly disposition.
Gar(78)-1
Western Police District HQ, where Enteng and Dinky were brought. One PC in the office featured this crime-fighting software.

Gar(79)
Another PC in the same office, with more essential law-and-order-oriented programs running.
Gar(80)
Mr. Policeman explaining that t-shirts do not promote tranquility.
Gar(82)
Hours later, at the fiscal’s office, where the phones had been cut off the day before throughout most of City Hall.

The news and punditocracy has been buzzing about the Baywalk abductions. Palace says Dinky meant to provoke, reports Malaya; Claudio taunts Dinky for baiting police, reports the Manila Times. And on a more general note, Arrests in RP alarms Norway while Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte says, If this is martial law, just say it.

Neal Cruz tackles the absurdity of the administration arguments. Dan Mariano weighs in with what the implications of the arrest are. Yesterday, Rina Jimenez-David said it seemed administration overkill (Max Soliven in his column, too, said the police overreacted). Ellen Tordesillas is appalled.

Other news and commentary:

Mediamen no longer welcome at Malacañang?

Gloria allies call FVR an economic saboteur (“economic sabotage” having been dusted off by the President as the pretext for the Star Chambers to come).

Anti-Thaksin protesters defy police. And Thaksin repeats vow to stay on as half of Bangkok won’t vote.

A commentary in The Nation strikes a familiar chord: Anti-Thaksin unity makes for an interesting future. It says,

…demonstrators were asked whether they wanted a royally appointed prime minister and government, they shouted “yes” enthusiastically and followed with an eight-minute standing ovation waving miniature Thai flags.

What we were witnessing here was a shifting paradigm of right, left and those in the middle to a common ground. Their convergence near the Royal Plaza was brought about by caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s political arrogance and populism. The phenomenon reflects huge a change in the public perception of movers and shakers in Thai politics. It is no longer confined to particular groups – such as intellectuals, businessmen, labourers, farmers, students and teachers – as in the past but rather a whole group of multi-stakeholders.

The anti-Thaksin movement began as a demonstration to protect the revered institution of monarchy from a dictatorial leader imitating kingly ways…

Starting January, various corruption charges levelled against Thaksin and his cronies have began to sink in…

By late January, the pro-monarchy banners moved slowly into the background as the numbers of middle class at the protest grew exponentially, as well professionals and university students. Their concern over Thaksin’s conflicts of interest, legitimacy and moral authority intensified and quickly turned into rallying points for the coalition of more than 100 civil society organisations, the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

In the past week, it was clear at Government House that the glue binding this coalition of the willing is the fear that Thaksin would rob them of the hard-won democratic gains of three decades. Whatever the implications, the movement has achieved something extraordinary, whether Thaksin steps down or not. This kind of commonality and unity of purpose must be tapped and applied more diversely. It would not be a surprise if the anti-Thaksin rallies morph into smaller but more focused ones aimed at bringing him to justice.

Several questions have arisen. Is this a marriage of convenience, or is it a paradigm shift forced by the vulgarity of Thaksin’s populist politics? Will this mass movement lay the foundation of new participatory democracy in Thailand?

It is hard to predict what will transpire in a post-Thaksin era but two issues stand out. The new power-holders – whoever they are and whatever their mandate – will have to deal with political reform, including constitutional amendments, and Thaksin’s future…

The blogosphere has been busily commenting on the Baywalk abductions, too: sketches of a village idiot savant says it’s like wrestling; [email protected] points out it’s more of the Calibrated, Pre-emptive Response treatment; The Bunker Chronicles and An OFW Living in Hong Kong, and akosimic, and REBOLUSYON2006, and LAGALAG weigh in, too. Carlos Celdran thinks the whole thing was full of crap.

Vincula says black is the new yellow. Now What, Cat? says please, leave black alone.

By Jove and McVie Show Season 4 seem surprised that “V for Vendetta” continues to be shown in cinemas.

And here’s an interesting online activity: Online snap elections.

  1. Sleeping and Joselu,

I apologize for the four letter words and some even beyond 4 letters.

To be honest you are the life the party so to speak.

    About fashion police….

  2. I guess you can feel proud that Sassy lawyer, the Manila Standard columnist, was disappointed in you.

That means you made the shitlist of the “what’s your alternative?” choir – the ones who, while admitting that we are all wallowing in shit right now, still have the temerity to ask that question.

  3. This government made a bad move (as it has always been) by arresting Dinky and Enteng. The arrests only generated publicity (which is good for the BWM) to an otherwise peaceful expression of disgust against a government widely percieved to be corrupt and illegitimate.

“It’s dangerous to be right when the government is wrong.”
    –Francois Marie Arouet Voltaire

“He who strikes terror into others is himself in continual fear.”
    –Claudian

“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”
    –Elie Wiesel

  4. Ngayon alam na natin kung ano ang kahulugan ng acronym ng “PNP”.

    >>Praning na Pulis!

    ~~~
    Mr. Policeman ignored the question. Instead, he said to the people in black, “We know what you intend to do.”
    Naturally, they asked, “And what is that?”
    Mr. Policeman sidestepped the question and said, “We know you are up to no good. Look at your shirts.”
    ~~~

    >> Eh papaanong hind magiging praning yang mga pulis na yan..?

-Hit-hitin ba naman nila yung mga shabung kinukumpiska nila..?

  5. Calibrated pre-emptive response means exactly that. The police have the power to pre-emptively stop you from wearing black t-shirts and doing a thumbs-down together with other people. 😀 I believe it’s up before the Supreme Court already? The police defense is simple: “Intelligence reports” What intelligence reports? “That’s classified information. National security and all that ek-ek.”

Im surprised though that Sec. Dinky Soliman felt the need to defend her actions by saying “Naglalakad lang kami” and “the T-shirts didnt mean Gloria.” That was just duplicitous, I think. She shoudlve owned up: “We’re on our way to do the thumbs-down sign then we’ll go and see a movie.” and “Yes, the T-shirts mean ‘Patalsikin na si GMA.'” These were well within their rights and wouldve earned the respect of many.

Anyway, it was victory for the B&W people. The national exposure could only help their cause. And if the police’s actions could be shown to be emanating from orders from the Palace instead of just the actions of an overzealous police who didnt know better, this charge could be added to the impeachment proceedings as well.

    Oh, and what’s a somos?

  6. it was to be supposed to be dinky’s moment, pero… what is she still afraid of? she’s a big joke!!!

re sassy lawyer, for all i know, she is always arguing on issues, unlike most here who loves to appeal on the emotion of the readers. personally, i’d like to see gloria out, but isn’t it more appealing to see gma behind bars for all that we believe she did wrong, than just unsitting her?

  7. gma and her policemen are becoming more and more aggressive…and unreasonable. tsk tsk tsk!

  8. mlq3,

your link to “anti-thakshin’s protesters defy police” is an inquirer news not containing exactly what I, at least, expected. it is a totally diferrent story.

Anyway, if the story about thai people defying police is true, then i have more respect for them than the esteemed i hold for the filipinos in glorias time. For who is defying the no-permit-no rally order? only twenty something in black on roxas blvd.

  9. I have read Sassy’s blog….

Joey, dun ka pala unang naghimutok tungkol sa kampihan….

    About Critiquing…

I just could not get who was critiqued.

Manolo, you were mentioned a couple of times, but was that

also a way of critiquing you?

  10. Comment #7:

    Ahem..Bote?

How do you suggest gluemac be put behind bars without first unseating her ?

  11. again, sir, your “online snap election” is linked to that same inquirer news item (arroyo to court martial…)

  12. Manolo,

You are so naughty! I should get myself some of those crime fighting softwares and programs. They are so effective!

I guess when they are not dispersing peaceful strolls, they immerse themselves in the latest crime fighting, liberty repressing programs.

Gotta get them for my Criminal Procedure class. Thanks M!

  13. start appealing into the senses of the oppositions in the house to do better for the next round of the impeachment. Urge them to work more, talk less, and make guesting on tv secondary.
start appealing also to our representative to heed our sentiments, and act as our representative!

do you see other means than the impeachment? we don’t need another erap!

  14. One of the reasons; i think, why the arbitrary arrest in the baywalk and other things (pp1017, eo464, cpr, etc.) are done by the administration is that they can actually do it, and even if some protests against them, they can just laugh about it and move on.

Look at what is happening (1) court cases are readied against the police, but is there anything that’s going to come out of it?
    (2) The administration gives out news releases what they’re going to do (charge dinky, et al).
    (3) There is no great outcry against what was done (meaning that majority agrees with the police?)

Since only a few was actually offended by it, then the administration will take it as a que that it’s okay.

Even France has learned a lesson from Gloria’s administration. Even if there were half a million protested against the new labor law, the government was able to “weather” the protests. Why not GMA’s government? They can too, do the same; weather the protests.

  15. Palace to opposition: ‘Leave our soldiers alone’
    http://news.inq7.net/breaking/index.php?index=1&story_id=70007

Manila – March 20 Press Secretary Toting Bunye is at it again. The Palace’s dimwit version of Hitler’s Goebbels told the political opposition to “leave our soldiers alone” the Inquirer reported.

According to the daily, Bunye declared most emphatically that “If they [opposition] really want to help, we suggest that they LEAVE OUR SOLDIERS ALONE in the performance of their duty. They can help instead 0ploy, no matter how one looks at it.”

The Press Secretary’s statement is seen as another inanity. Bunye has been suffering from a damaged reputation and has been known to be a bumbling idiot at times, since his infamous “I have two discs (the left and the right)”, Garci-related exposé.

His recent statement confirms public perception that the Palace, which has been wielding the military as Gloria Mandaraya’s sword of Damocles over the heads of people opposed to the Palace squatters, considers the soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as belonging to the Palace and not to the nation.#

  16. HOT ITEMS AND BEST SELLING PRODUCTS :

    3. GLORIA DART BOARD (same with pic)

  17. Jon,

I beg to disgress: France does not need to learn from dimwit pint-sized termite minded squatter in Malacanang.

France recognition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has never wavered: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Expression, Freedom to Strike and even Freedom to Look Foolish, etc.

A few governments in France (both left and right wing) fell when they started to tamper with French citizens’ rights.

Most famous was WWII hero and father of modern France: General Charles de Gaulle. The former French President was toppled by a national plebiscite. He resigned following a national referendum in 1969 – which he himself called – whose results stated categorically that the French no longer believed that he had the confidence and the support of the French people to lead the nation.

Unlike thick-faced, lying, thieving, cheating Gloria Mandaraya, General de Gaulle stepped down in spite of the fact that he was elected to a full presidential term through UNTAINTED universal suffrage.

Gloria’s understanding of basic human rights is comparable to the “mental” ability of garden slugs. For this, she will always stand below the heels of the world’s greats.

  18. young,

baka naman the more gloria will get popular with these hot items. nakakatawa, gloria arinola.

    helga,

is the black t-shirt bearing the print _patalsikin na, now na, available for sale? where?

  19. And Jon,

    500,000 student protesters is nothing.

Some 15 years ago, President Francois Mitterand faced the wrath of more than 10 million parents and students in the streets all over the country when parents (me included) protested over a proposed Socialist Party law that would scrap government subsidy for Catholic and private schools.

Had he not withdrawn the proposed law, Mitterand would have been forced to call for a referendum which would have put his presidency at a great risk. He backed down and scrapped the proposed law because he knew that he could not risk the results of a referendum which could spell his doom – honor dictates the results of a referendum against him would force him to resign.

Don, in France, the practice is that citizens elect their leader but they also have the right to bring him down when the leader no longer enjoys their trust and confidence.

That’s is what civilization is all about.

  20. ADB instead in france they go out and try to quell full riots with Plastic Bullets and tear gas. No ability to have a CPR to make sure that people and property does not get damaged.

I for one do not want to end up living in a place like France.

    No problem MLQ3 and KARL..

  21. France is not the only country in Europe that recognizes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Britain is one of the strongest proponents of Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Expression, Freedom of Speech.

Margaret Thatcher, hero of the Falklands War, saviour of the British economy, hero of the Iron Curtain “war”, a pillar of the European Union (Common Market it was known then) who had faced assasination attempts by the IRA and other terrorist groups was forced to call for a general elections putting her government in peril when the British public decided that they didn’t like her unfair poll tax. She lost not only the elections but also her party’s leadership and was replaced by John Major.

As honor would dictate, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, one of the best government leaders Britain ever had resigned totally from politics following her defeat.

  22. Sleeping, you will have to count as a civilized to be able to live in a civilized country. From your utterings, you don’t know what that means.

  23. Once again ADB..

    The dictionary for you..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization

“civilization” – meaning the opposite of “barbarity”

Shooting at rioters in the street, cars burning, people being injured and taken to hospital.. Is all Part of being barbaric.

    From dictionary….
barbarian is used to mean someone violent, primitive, uncouth or uncivilized in general, in very much the same disapproving and superior sense that Edward Gibbon used the term in Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire..

  24. Sleeping,

Thank you for the explanation: you have confirmed Gloria Mandaraya’s government of the barbaric: the determination to keep the majority of the nation in wanton poverty with no health care, no education, with children dying by the thousands because of malnuorishment and diseases, kept in prisons with adult criminals in absolutely abject conditions… that is the most BARBARIC act that a barbaric government like Gloria Mandaraya’s government could do to its own people.

Just look at the human rights record of the Philippines as detailed by the Philippines strongest ally, the United States of America in the State Department’s website.

Don’t be proud of Gloria Mandaraya, Sleeping. She is not worth your time and adulation. You deserve a better leader.
You must not condone her wantone disregard for all that is basic in good governance. You must not take pride in keeping a persona in Malacanag who doesn’t give a hoot whether your impoverished brethren in the Philippines dies or survives.

Wake up, Sleeping. Your fawning adulation for Gloria Mandaraya is all wrong!

  25. And for English Politics, At one stage the most hated women.
    4 May 1979 – 28 November 1990

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_miners'_strike_(1984-1985)

The miners’ strike of 1984-5 was a major piece of industrial action affecting the British coal industry. It was a defining event in the history of industrial relations in the UK. More broadly it was a key political event in late 20th century Britain, the central contest in a dispute as to whether the UK’s mixed economy should be mainly capitalist or mainly socialist. The strike ended with the defeat of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) by the Conservative government, which then proceeded to consolidate its free market programme.

    Internal Challenge in the Party..

A challenge was precipitated by the resignation of Sir Geoffrey Howe, with whom Thatcher had for a long time had very bad personal relations, on 1 November 1990. The immediate pretext was a particularly combative answer she had given to a parliamentary question in the Commons on the 30 October 1990, in which she denounced the president of the European Commission, Jacques Delors.

By 1990, opposition to Thatcher’s policies on local government taxation, her Government’s perceived mishandling of the economy (especially high interest rates of 15%, which were undermining her core voting base within the home-owning, entrepreneurial and business sectors), and the divisions opening within her party over the appropriate handling of European integration made her and her party seem increasingly politically vulnerable.

  26. Sleeping,

I repeat: Gloria’s understanding of basic human rights is comparable to the “mental” ability of garden slugs. For this, she will always stand below the heels of the world’s greats.

  27. Oh and you bring up the US..

Where are those secret prisons (Europe), Torture, Shall i go on…

  28. Don’t know…Are you speaking of US prisons in some of their NATO country allies in Eastern Europe? You must ask your American friends (those US marines for instance who are accused of raping a Filipina in Subic may know – they’re right across your doorstep US Embassy…why don’t you hop over to where they are and ask them?)

France will NEVER tolerate a US torture prison on its soil.

It was General Charles de Gaulle who kicked out the US and NATO out of French soil that’s why NATO had to go to Brussels.

Sleeping, you must be reading Liwayway or Bulaklak for your current events.

You are starting to seriously bore me…

Your knowledge of history Sleeping, having to refer to the net all the time for the most basic of historical facts shows that you’ve never left the confines of your 4 walls.

Civilization is not just centered on supporting Gloria Mandaraya, you know that Sleeping, don’t you? (or maybe not… ugh, what a TEDIOUS BORE!)

  29. Again, a friendly advice Sleeping:

Don’t be proud of Gloria Mandaraya, Sleeping.

She is not worth your time and adulation. You deserve a better leader.

You must not condone her wanton disregard for all that is basic in good governance. You must not take pride in keeping a persona in Malacanang who doesn’t give a hoot whether your impoverished brethren in the Philippines dies or survives.

Wake up, Sleeping. Your fawning adulation for Gloria Mandaraya, is all wrong!

Why do you persist in supporting Gloria Mandaraya who is a cheat, a liar and who is corruption personified, why?

  30. To show that your notion of history and current events is is shallow and superficial, Sleeping, first we don’t just say “English politics” when the Prime Minister of Great Britain is involved. Margaret Thatcher, although an Englishwoman, was the British Prime Minister at the time and her government was the government of the British wide electorate, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland…

Prime Minister Tony Blair is Welsh.

Prime Minister James Callaghan was Scottish.

Thatcher who was the hero of the Falklands, the savior of the British economy and all that is honorable STEPPED DOWN when the British didn’t want her anymore.

She knows the meaning of HONOR!

  31. ADB,

When I say “France learned” or maybe we can add “Thaksin learned” from Gloria, that is on the way of disregarding dissent and protests.

  32. SLEEPING IS AN ASSHOLE … A GMA MOUTHPIECE
A PERSON DEFENDING A CHEAT A LIAR AND SOMEONE PEOPLE
DOESN’T TRUST IS EXACTLY THE SAME PERSON, SO WHY
BOTHER ARGUING WITH THIS KIND OF PERSON.

SLEEPING AND JOSELU IS OUT OF OUR LEAGUE, DON’T MIND THEM
    ADB.

  33. Jon,

Unfortunately, France tolerates too much violent dissent and violent protests even those that endanger public security.

The students of Sorbonne where my son is a student as well, has just ransacked and demolished one of Sorbonne’s oldest ampitheatres, broke century old stained glass windows, set fire to many of the furniture in the amphiteatre and destroyed most of the antique contents.

And do you know why these students are protesting violently? I guess not many in the Philippines know or understand.

I have a home in the center of Paris and I can see from my window the agitated students (16 yr olds to 25 yr olds most of them) whom you never know may be infiltrated by saboteurs… one “flash” move and a demonstration could degenerate into utter wanton destruction of public and private properties.

Many shopowerners in the streets are terrified that this demonstration would be a repeat of the Student Revolt of 1968.

The current demonstrations in Paris are NOT AT ALL the kind of baywalk stroll “protest” that Dinky and Enteng did. Hehehheh! That Dinky and Entend weree collared and arrested for a stroll really is extraordinary, so unbelievable that one is inclined to think that Pinoy cops are getting as insane as Gloria Mandaraya.

No society is perfect because people and leaders may abuse a given right but by gosh, it is so much more imperfect in the Philippines because Gloria Mandaraya is ALREADY abusing a right that you guys HAVEN’T EVEN begun to claim…

Jon, unless you live here, you have NO IDEA of what French demonstrations are like! Philippine street demonstrators in the likes of French street demonstrators haven’t even begun to be born yet!

  34. You are right Dwarf!

Did you notice it’s past 7 pm? Sleeping’s duty as a Luli Macapagal internet brigade mouthpiece is finished for the day…

  35. I guess the French feels more strongly for their beliefs. When they feel that their government tramples on their rights, they resist strongly.

When will the Filipino feel the same? Maybe not in a long time. Sometimes many still can smile even if they’re taken advantage of.

  37. Dwarf,

Those guys you named in your list are extremely LUCKY they are Philippine officials in Gloria Mandaraya-Arroyo’s government.

The political crimes that they have committed and their wanton disregard for basic human rights (violating Dinky’s, Enteng’s and company basig human right to a stroll “protest”) would have earned them the POLITICAL GUILLOTINE and jail sentences in France.

Had CLAUDIO DEFENSOR AVELINO CRUZ LUMIBAO RAUL GONZALES
ERMITA BUNYE PUNO NORBERTO GONZALES QUEROL SENGA ESPERON been French, French demonstrators of all political colors would never have tolerated a minute of their political existence; demonstrators and protesters of all political colors would have flocked to the streets nationwide and would have torn these guys down without an iota of hesitation.

  38. Jon,

I believe you are right: the French feel VERY STRONGLY for their beliefs and their rights.

I have no doubt the Filipinos will get to the same level of feeling… After all, wasn’t Bonifacio influenced by his readings on the French Revolution of 1789?

  39. Andres Bonifacio’s readings of the French Revolution is a good start.

Voltaire himself was an admirer of one of the most acclaimed writers on the treatises on government in history: John Locke

Many Filipinos are aware and have read the works of Voltaire, of Victor Hugo, of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (and even indirectly, of the treatises written by Baron de Montesquieu) which inspired and triggered the French Revolution. If Filipinos continue to read them, they will eventually FEEL VERY STRONGLY FOR THEIR BELIEFS and RIGHTS.

  40. Voltaire whose writings helped trigger the French Revolution and who in the course of his protests in writing suffered persecution, jail sentence in La Bastille, exile and other humiliations said:

“I may not agree with what you say but I will fight to the death your right to say it.”

Dinky and Enteng hadn’t even begun to say what they wanted to say during their stroll protest and they were already manhandled, gagged, clamped down on, politically brutalized by Gloria Mandaraya-Arroyo’s government of primitives.

  41. I believe not all Filipino cops are aware of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A copy of the declaration SHOULD BE POSTED (and translated if necessary in the local dialect) MANDATORILY in every police station and precinct, in each classroom and in every public building in the whole archipelago for the Filipino population to read and realize that they have RIGHTS.

  42. In the same manner that a copy of the ARTICLES OF WAR should be posted in every military building and every Philippine Navy ship for all military officers and men to know their duties and responsibilities.

  43. any chance you can publish the notorious tshirt design template for download (e.g., ppt with dimensions specs) so we can have it reproduced here in mindanao, and stage our own black friday protests?

  46. Batang Mindanao, please wait for our free download of Black & White Movement/Black Friday Protest collaterals. This will make it easy for everyone outside of Metro Manila to produce the tees. That means you, too, AdB! Enteng hopes to get everything prepared and put up by tomorrow so you can print before Friday. He thinks it’ll be a link, much easier than a banner ad, he says. I’ll post a notice for everyone for sure.

If you guys think Sleeping and Joselu are a bother, check out our blogs, we’ve been attacked big time. But I think it’s great, we’ve gotten their attention, poor things.

  47. Just great Helga, Thanks!

Will have t-shirts made (hope to find my Chinese guy who can do it soon) and distribute them to Pinoys here.

    Cheers….
